What Class of eBike Is Right for You?
A Guide to Colorado eBike Classifications

Whether you’re commuting, exploring trails, or just looking for a fun way to get around town, eBikes offer freedom, convenience, and a healthier lifestyle. But not all eBikes are created equal—before you buy, it’s essential to know how different types are classified and what that means for where and how you can ride.

At eBikes USA, we carry a wide selection of electric bikes, from lightweight cruisers to high-powered models. This guide breaks down Colorado’s eBike and motor-drive cycle classifications to help you choose the right model for your needs and lifestyle.

The 4 Main Categories of eBikes and Electric Cycles

1. Electric Bicycles – Street and Path Legal

These are the most popular eBikes and fall into three classes:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, no throttle, max assisted speed: 20 mph
  • Class 2: Pedal-assist with throttle, max assisted speed: 20 mph
  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, no throttle, max assisted speed: 28 mph

Note: Some manufacturers provide an option for changing the class mode in the settings to be able to be in compliance with local laws.

What’s Legal on Trails and Roads?

In Colorado, all bicycles, eBikes, and motor-driven cycles must follow the same rules as any other motor vehicle. Trail access can vary based on local ordinances, especially for Class 3 eBikes. Always check signage or ask local authorities before riding on public trails.
