PSA: Extreme Cold = Bring Your Battery Inside!

A red Troxus ebike in a clean garage.

As the coldest part of the season is bearing down upon us, we wanted to remind everyone of the basics for safe usage and storage.

Short Story:  With the extreme cold temperatures this month, it’s best to bring your battery inside if your garage is not heated.
Here’s why:

  1. A lithium-ion battery can operate in very low temperatures (20° to -4°) but be advised that there will be significant performance and capacity loss as the chemical reactions slow. The colder it is, the more pronounced those issues will be.

  2. Once finished riding, the battery should be brought inside to warm up.

  3. Let the battery warm up before charging. Charging below freezing temps can cause irreversible damage and/or potential safety issues.

  4. Long term exposure to below freezing temperatures could permanently damage the battery.

  5. Make sure to store the battery with somewhere around half charge if not riding for extended amounts of time.

With these few simple rules, you’ll make sure that your battery will survive the winter intact and ready to ride again when the weather warms up! If you are needing service for your ebike, schedule an appointment by clicking the button below!
